It's official: J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the No. 1 grossing film of all time in North America, not accounting for inflation.
On Wednesday, the Disney and Lucasfilm mega-blockbuster is overtaking the $760.5 million earned by James Cameron's Avatar. Force Awakens which grossed $8 million on Tuesday for a domestic total of $758.2 million achieved the milestone in only 20 days in release, a remarkable feat.
Released in December 2009, Avatar grossed nearly $750 million in its original, seven-month run, plus another $10 million-plus when it was rereleased in theaters.
Thanks to Force Awakens, domestic revenue for 2015 was able to hit a record $11 billion at the last minute.

Partly my fault as I went to see it the first weekend.
I've never seen Avatar though. It's on my list, but buried pretty far down.

(37,748 posts)It may be the first movie since the mid-eighties (Raiders of the Lost Ark) I've seen twice on the big screen if my plans for Friday stay as is.

(22,340 posts)It's not going to be the same on the small screen. The writing, acting, and concept are nothing special (actually far from it). The effects were fantastic on the big screen.

(56,829 posts)I usually love Sci-Fi and Fantasy and I liked Avatar in the theaters. However, I'm not really drawn to watch the movie when they show it on the various cable channels. And, despite all the success the movie had, you don't really see nerds, or even kids, wearing Avatar merchandise. So, while Avatar was big at the time, it does not seem to have had a lasting impact as a movie beyond moving 3D technology into the 21st century. Maybe it will change over the next 10-15 years, but I'm not really sure it will.
