The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsJust ordered another 5 lbs of coffee. I am a caffeine based lifeform.
Got half a pound left of the 5 I got last month.
2½ each of Papua New Guinea and Ethiopian Yirgacheefe.

(9,901 posts)We have using an old air popcorn popper as a roaster. Fresh roasted is the way to go if you have the time, and a bit of ingenuity.

(8,462 posts)What's the setup with the air popper? Do you go to 2nd crack with it? Where do you put your thermometers or do you just wing it?
denbot
(9,901 posts)Right after the first crack I listen for the softer popping of the second crack. I start cooling my beans as soon as I'm sure that the 2nd crack is about to get going.
We use an old West Bend Poppery II popcorn maker. If I happen to be in a 2nd hand store that has one I'll grab it. The only down side other then the chaff (I set up in my driveway to deal with the chaff), is you have limit batches to just over a 1/2 cup, each of which take about 5 minutes start to finish.
I'll have to try it one day.

(86,775 posts)therefore, I have to have reeeeeeally good coffee. Fortunately there is a roaster in town who only deals in fair trade beans and other products. I will pay $12/lbs for fair trade any day of the week. It's nice to walk into the store on a really cold day when the roaster is running.

(4,588 posts)My local grocery store stopped carrying it, despite the fact that they couldn't keep it in stock. I've heard that Ethiopian Yirgacheefe needs no pesticides because it grows like a weed over there.

I also don't like coffee, but I love the aroma. Except for the Bustello that mr. k makes in the morning.

Coffee is also one of those substances that can only taste anywhere near its aroma if there's enough sugar in it. Kind of like how chocolate is only edible if it's sugared

(5,477 posts)5lbs a month is a lot of coffee. 1lb should yield about 2gallons, which is about 20 12oz cups. You're drinking about 100 cups/month, or 3 cups per day.
