Would like some travel suggestions

Driving from southern Alberta to New England next month. Total flexibility as long as the route is more or less direct; I mean, I don't want to go via New Mexico or anything like that. And I don't need to visit the world's largest rubberband ball or the biggest chair in America. Nice towns would be good. Decent food would be nice. Avoiding driving through cities would be ok. Once I get to the Buffalo area, it's going to be a straight shot across the thruway and then into New England. Or maybe I'll stay in Canada over to Ottawa or Montreal and then head south.

But between Alberta and the Buffalo/Toronto/Ottawa "vector," any suggestions welcome.
