Lucky Penny Day Pennies are often just a nuisance. They don’t seem to be worth much, especially considering their weight, which is decidedly disproportionate to their actual value. So what are they really good for? Well, for centuries, finding a penny has been considered a good omen, an event that suggested something good would happen in the life of the finder. Lucky Penny Day is all about celebrating this simple superstition and doing what we can to make sure some good does, in fact, come of pennies. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/lucky-penny-day/

Title Track Day Some albums are defined by a single track, ones that tie the entire album together and will be the banner for the sound it brings, and often the best of these are the title track of the album. Title Track Day is a day to dust off and break out those albums whose artists have nailed it, and placed the most iconic of a collections music right there on the label. Title tracks are, simply put, the song on an album that shares the name of the album itself. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/title-track-day/

World Turtle Day encourages you to discover the world of turtles and tortoises, and to learn how you can help to protect and help them to thrive. Some ideas include dressing up as turtles, saving turtles on roads, or getting involved in turtle research. https://www.daysoftheyear.com/days/turtle-day/

When I was a kid, we had a turtle for quite awhile. A friend of my Dad's found him crossing the road going over the mountain and gave him to my Dad because he knew he had kids. He was an Eastern Painted Turtle and I was quite fond of him. I always wanted a pet, but till then all we had was goldfish.

After awhile my Dad said it was time to let him go. I was sad, but I understood. We took him to Yaddo, which is an artists' retreat in Saratoga (Springs, NY) which has lovely woods and streams and is far from any traffic and he seemed to like it there, remember him bobbing his head in the water. I like to think he's still living a happy life there.

I had a teacher who had a friend serving in Vietnam at the time and all the kids in the class wrote him letters. My letter told all about my turtle. I named him(?) Stacey, after my mother.

I am sure that Stacey and his/her offspring continue to thrive at Yaddo living out happy turtle lives, whatever that might entail.

I never had any turtles. We had a few guppies for awhile and a dog which is something my Mom wanted. He was a Chihuahua and while a small dog did manage to nab a couple of "gentlemen" who where stealing the tires off a car across the street from us. He woke us up in the middle of the night with a low growl and Mom called the police. The neighbor brought him a few doggie treats which he enjoyed.

Time to get moving and off to do the work thing.... So, looking forward to retirement which I am hoping to be next January.....

A year or two after that we actually got a puppy! In school we had to write an essay about what we wanted more than anything and, of course, I said I wanted a pet, though I have no idea if that had anything to do with it.

She was a cocker spaniel which was the kind of dog my Dad (the animal lover) had as a kid and though she was "our" dog, you know whose dog she really was. I loved that dog more than anything, always.

My aunt and uncle (who always trained his own dogs) gave my Dad a book on training cocker spaniels, but I was the one who read the book and I taught that dog everything I could think of. She would sit and stay and play hide and seek and even did tricks, like balancing a cookie on her nose until I gave her the signal, then she'd toss it in the air before she caught and ate it.

We had that dog for almost 15 years and of course I thought I'd never have another dog, but they seem to find me. I adopt older dogs now. I found my beloved Barney on TV, when he was up for adoption on the "Pet Connection" of the local news. My mother called me because there was such a resemblance and I called before the segment was even over...

They said he was 10 or 11, had spent his entire life at a "commercial kennel," needed a "special home" because he had never lived with people and wasn't housebroken. Of course, I knew that was the dog for me! The very next day, my mother and I drove over an hour to meet Barney. He was such a beautiful dog with the best temperament and I had him for wonderful eight years!

I don't have a pic online of my first puppy, but here's my Barney:

We used to find box turtles when we were kids, but I haven't seen one in decades.

Just for fun:
