but increasingly for me, I feel the same way. I live in NYC and ever since the 1976 Bicentennial we have had Fleet Week beginning a few days before Memorial Day featuring an international array of warships docking on the Hudson River. There are military flyovers and tours of the ships and various sailors wandering around Midtown and unending Thank You for Defending our Freedoms in the MSM - which they do not - most of it's been discretionary invasions for the sake of Big Oil and the 1%. See further, Smedley Butler, author of War is a Racket.

I understand that the original intent of this holiday (originally called Decoration Day which is how my second cousin born in 1890 referred to it) was to honor those who died in war and that's fine - but the meaning has mutated and now- it's mainstream interventionist propaganda interspersed with breathless reports on the price of gas for beachgoers. Plus - Don't Miss Those Sales!

and great grandpa was a veteran of the first world war, dad a veteran of ww11. every year - either on uncle david's "memorial day" or birthday and later, on the gov & union sanctioned "memorial day", we would all (grandma & grandpa, too) pile into the family station wagon with fresh picked flowers from the ranch and beach/barbq stuff. first we'd go by the cemetary and then we'd head to the beach. if the it was too foggy or cold for the beach, we'd go to our favorite oak shaded park. good times!

I had uncles in Korea, and Vietnam, cousins in Vietnam, and the Gulf Wars, I served in the Persian Gulf.

Memorial Day is a time whe I and many others think of those killed, or maimed in service to our country. Those of us who serve do not have the option of second guessing the competence or honor of those who put us in harms way.
