Congleton Bear

Congleton, Cheshire became notorious in the 1620’s when bear-baiting was a popular sport there. Even so, the town was unable to draw large enough crowds to generate the revenue it needed to buy a new, more aggressive bear. The town used the money it saved to buy a bible, which they were later able to sell. They used that money to buy a better bear.
