In Richmond, Indiana, a town of about 36,000 people, there are four McDonald's, three Taco Bells, three Dairy Queens, two Wendy's, two KFCs, two Arby's, two Bob Evans, two Subways, two Little Caesars, one Rally's, one Cracker Barrel, one White Castle, one Olive Garden, one Applebee's, one O'Charleys, one Chili's, one Fazoli's, one Frisch's, one Long John Silver's, one Tim Horton's, one Texas Roadhouse, one Pizza Hut, one Domino's, one Papa John's, one Penn Station, and one Red Lobster. There are also several independent diners and restaurants.
Wayne County, in which Richmond is located, also has the highest rate of diabetes among its population in the state of Indiana.

(10,418 posts)I get plenty of exercise from my job now and I've lost some weight. I had blood work done recently and I'm still okay as far as my blood sugar goes.
I've heard that one reason a lot of people get type 2 diabetes is from leading a sedentary lifestyle. So if your diet consists to a great degree of the foods from those restaurants, you have a job where you have to sit all day, and you aren't very active outside of work, you're probably going to have a problem at some point.

(10,418 posts)We have four independent restaurants here that are really good, and when we eat out we usually go to one of those places. That's it in a town with probably over 50 restaurants.

(4,640 posts)and we have much less of a choice than you. I grew up just outside of Chicago, so I certainly do miss the variety!
