Here's where I was 48 years ago today.

I had plunked down $11 - a fortune - and bought a ticket for a steam excursion from Roanoke, Virginia, to Shenandoah, Virginia, and back. It was a Sunday. I can recall the day as if it were happening right now.

The High Iron special passes the beautiful fall colors of rural Virginia.

I haven't been able to track down this exact location.

deal. It was a big deal, as the train was 100 years old. Really cool.
