How ‘Toni Erdmann’ Became an Unexpected Comedy

PARIS — The German director Maren Ade’s breakout film, “Toni Erdmann,” has won over audiences and racked up awards across Europe. An uncharacterizable father-daughter story that’s also about neoliberal economic reforms in Romania and the clash between the generation of 1968 and its capitalist children, the film is exceptional for another reason: It’s hilarious.

Germany has generally not been known for exporting comedies — and, to outsiders, has a perhaps undeserved reputation for humorlessness — but “Toni Erdmann,” which has been sold around the world, upends that. “I said to my producer, ‘I’m sorry, this will not be a comedy, this will be a very long and sad film,’” Ms. Ade said in a recent interview. “But we were very happy that the comic aspect came out while editing.”

This quote from an IMDB review is an apt description

The main theme is loneliness. A father realizes that his daughter is not happy even though she has a great career and pretends to be fine. So he tries to bring joy back in her life.

It's available online if you know where to look.

I rarely see movies in movie theaters-they're usually cold(I live in Alaska, and I can't stand being cold when I'm inside!) and it's hard to relax while surrounded by so many people; people moving, checking phones, talking, etc. The last movie I went to I kept falling asleep, awful when you're sitting down and your head keeps whipping back

This one I can't wait to see in the theater.
Meanwhile, I'll be looking!
