OP
I wasn't aware of this movie until now. It's not playing yet in my area, or even in Seattle.

How Toni Erdmann Became an Unexpected Comedy
PARIS The German director Maren Ades breakout film, Toni Erdmann, has won over audiences and racked up awards across Europe. An uncharacterizable father-daughter story thats also about neoliberal economic reforms in Romania and the clash between the generation of 1968 and its capitalist children, the film is exceptional for another reason: Its hilarious.
Germany has generally not been known for exporting comedies and, to outsiders, has a perhaps undeserved reputation for humorlessness but Toni Erdmann, which has been sold around the world, upends that. I said to my producer, Im sorry, this will not be a comedy, this will be a very long and sad film, Ms. Ade said in a recent interview. But we were very happy that the comic aspect came out while editing.

This quote from an IMDB review is an apt description
The main theme is loneliness. A father realizes that his daughter is not happy even though she has a great career and pretends to be fine. So he tries to bring joy back in her life.
It's available online if you know where to look.

(1,213 posts)3. I want to see it even more now-great article and description of the movie.
I rarely see movies in movie theaters-they're usually cold(I live in Alaska, and I can't stand being cold when I'm inside!) and it's hard to relax while surrounded by so many people; people moving, checking phones, talking, etc. The last movie I went to I kept falling asleep, awful when you're sitting down and your head keeps whipping back
This one I can't wait to see in the theater.
Meanwhile, I'll be looking!
