The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI've been a trucker for 20 winters, and each winter it gets harder.
It's not because my skills have deteriorated. When you're 24, you're 10 feet tall and bullet proof. When you get to be 44, mortality starts to creep into your bones and you become more aware of the dangers associated with life on the road.
That's what's behind my latest talk of a career move.
I've been lost in a whirlwind of ideas and emotions, lately. I need to simplify things. I just need to go in and punch the clock and then come home and watch some tube for a little while. Kinda let my unconscious work on a few things in the basement of my mind and just chill out.

(72,300 posts)For a few years I've been telling a driver with 37 years of over the road flatbed (oversized) loads ... it's time for something easier on the body. Chaining down loads in the single digits really isn't safe for an old man. This week he is on a new driving job and realized that I'm right. So, he'll be at yet another new trucking job before the end of the month.

(163 posts)it's time to make a career change. Safety becomes paramount with that job, any distractions can become disastrous. Hard to say what the economy will be doing in the next several years.
