3. Niyaz - The Hunt

Until recently, I didn't know the translation. I had always loved this song just by the tempo and musicality. Then I found this video with subtitles, in Persian and English. Then I got choked up, and especially so after reading the liner notes to the CD just now:

The Hunt
This is an old traditional folk song from Khorasson, Iran. There is a lot of play on words here mostly for the rhythmic impact which makes it challenging to translate. It is basically the story of a hunter told from his own perspective, who goes on a hunt one day with a friend. On the hunt he describes to his friend that everything he sees, from the mountains to all the animals he comes upon, remind him of his beloved. Seeing his beloved in all things, he cannot bring himself to kill a single creature.

For two reasons - her amazing voice and her untimely death before the world had a chance to discover her talent.

Strange place to hear that song.

It had been a while since I heard it and it pretty much stopped me in my tracks.

This was my mother's favorite song, may she rest in peace. Last year, I drove to my younger brother's town, to meet up with him and my older brother. One morning they asked me to drive them to the convenience store to buy coffee and a newspaper. On the way back, that song played off my I-pod. I looked in the rear view mirror at my big bro, and tears were streaming down his face. I started crying, and then little bro started crying, too. When we got back to the house, big bro says "Give me your I-pod". He practically ran into the house and copied the song onto his I-pod.

Another one that gets me every time: Daddy's Hat by Chet Atkins. My dad, who always wore a hat, was a huge Chet Atkins fan. I can hardly get through the song without serious boo-hooing

I associate with the death of my grandmother and the birth an illness at 4 weeks of my eldest daughter.

She ended-up fine, but it was a scary trip to ICU.

and mixed it together with police and news reports during the Murrah bombing. It has made the song completely unlistenable for me.

It is on youtube but I will not link to it as it features the fireman with the baby picture that I would rather never see again in my life. I once blasted a co-worker for using that image in a software demo so I sure as hell won't be inflicting it on anyone.

Used to sing my baby girls to sleep with that.
Mrs. Lib nearly died after #2 was born. I was totally frazzled trying to work and take care of her and the kids.
32 years ago. We all lived and are in pretty good shape.
But that song brings back a flood of memories. Mostly of my baby girls.

and the Silver Spoon
Little Boy Blue, and the Man in the Moon
When you comin' home, son?
I don't know when, but we'll get together, then, Dad
You know we'll have a good time then.

And as he drove away, it occurred to me..
he'd grown up just like me
My boy,, was just like me.
