Just as a matter of curiosity, I've always wanted to try Chicago deep dish style pizza. I know it evokes huge debates as to where it stands in the pizza pantheon, but I'd like to experience it for myself.
Sadly, freaking New York style pizza has pretty much a monopoly stranglehold on the pizza around here, and I don't even live in New York. So I can't even try.
Even if there was a place that did serve Chicago deep dish near me, it's not necessarily conducive to being sold by the slice. So I'd have to convince enough people to try it with me.
I'd also like to try Montreal style bagels, but same problem with the stupid New York monopoly.
And just because I'm a burger aficionado, In-N-Out burgers. Just to see if they actually live up to the hype.

(6,931 posts)in Denmark I grabbed what I thought were some onion rings but they were actually deep fried octopus. NOT delicious.

(52,331 posts)not sure i've ever had fried octopus, but can't believe i'm missing much.

(17,331 posts)Just finished some, as a matter of fact! I have looked at calamari in the store and figured it too might be good, but I haven't bought any yet. So you tasted it and hated it?
oldtime dfl_er
(6,931 posts)the same as calamari? I think what I inadvertently ate was calamari. And yea, it was awful, but probably mostly because I was expecting onion flavor. LOL
True Dough
(17,331 posts)is fried squid. I'm sure there's a distinction, but in my mind they're both icky fish!

(11,071 posts)It's cooked, seasoned and not particularly gross looking.
I've had octopus sushi and it was like chewing on rubber.

(53,339 posts)Served hot from the kitchen it's tender and delicious. It gets tougher if it sits for a long time or if it's reheated.

(9,205 posts)I have had Gino's East, at the restaurant, and it was delicious. I had Pizza Uno at O'Hare once, and bought one frozen once. I was not impressed with either.

(43,199 posts)In terms of the fast casual burger specialty places, so far I've tried Five Guys, Habit Burger, Smashburger, BurgerFi and Shake Shack. So far Five Guys is my favorite. There's a place called "Relish & More" that is excellent but I think they only have a couple of locations so I don't know if they count as a chain.

I've smelled it enough times at the local Chinese market, don't think I could get close enough to one to eat it.

(11,071 posts)There is a boba joint in town that does durian boba, I think that's probably how I'll end up trying it.

Bagel with Lox (I live in NYC and I still haven't tried this)

(22,168 posts)I grew up on grits. They are the best with butter and pepper, with runny fried eggs, sausage patties, home-made biscuits, and sliced fresh tomatoes on the side. Go to a restaurant down south, and if you order corn flakes, you'll get grits with it.
I can't really think of anything I'm dying to try. I have tried a lot of things that I've hated though.......shark, parsnips, blue cheese.

(18,837 posts)Their fries are hand-cut...you can watch them do it...but to me, they're a "so what," a little bland. Not bad, just "so what."
But the Double Double?
Holy crap.
Now, it's not a high-end "restaurant burger," with a fat grilled patty, brioche bun and upscale add-ons.
But in the realm of "fast food" burgers, it's the KING.
And it ain't fast, either. I had the misfortune of getting in the drive-through once behind a woman ordering food for a small army and had a 30 minute wait.
That's where McDonald's and Burger King topped that specific location, because on large orders like that, they will normally have the customer pull off to the side and bring their food out to them.
They did not do that.
But that's the only time something like that has happened. I now live on the East Coast, so In-n-Out is now nothing but a fond memory.

(11,843 posts)I grew up on the North Shore of Lake Superior where fisherman will take the eggs from the fish they catch, tie a nickle sized ball up in a mesh bags (or old pantyhose) and use it for bait.
Back to the cruise, a caviar sampler plate of four different type of caviar was an option at one of the formal dinners, so I ordered it. I did try it, but the first sniff said to me "Spawn bags!!"
