Everyone knew it would end with Cavs vs. Warriors in the finals.
Why bother with the other games?

(613 posts)Second season is the real season in the NBA.
The regular season is just for fun. And the games ARE fun!

(58,724 posts)But I wonder if any team actually deludes themselves into thinking they can make the finals or do they know it's all for show?

(58,724 posts)Just ridiculous how non-competitive these playoffs are leading up to the obvious final.

(18,479 posts)They obviously require superior to outstanding talent. However, since the essence of the term "professional" means (of a person) engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime professional sports will always contain an aspect of profit and risk as detailed in the movie 'Moneyball'. If you truly love a sport, college and amateur sports may be more satisfying.
Many years ago I learned the meaning of amateur in movie from a character played by the great John Houseman:
"Mrs. Burns is right, of course; you are amateurs, unlike certain pseudo-professionals like myself who insist on slave wages. Your voluntary and steadfast attendance at these rehearsals fully qualifies you for any definition of the word "amateur". What Mrs. Burns and many others are wrong about is the meaning of the word, which has to do with motivation, not quality. Remember "amo, amat, amas", the Latin verb "to love". The meaning of "amateur" is "he or she who does a thing for the love of it". There is no higher reason for singing than the love of doing it. In that respect, you do qualify as amateurs. And I salute you for it."

(4,858 posts)...and I hate it. The "wild card" has seriously impacted my enjoyment of the game. Pennant races are a thing of the past--real ones, that is. Now we have a "postseason". Fuck that. Once upon a time, baseball was *about* pennant races. That was what mattered--the 154, or 162, game season. That was the test, what people played for. One of the dirty little secrets of baseball history is that players regarded the World Series basically as glorified exhibition games. Winning was nice, and the extra money for winning came in handy before the days of Big Money. But winning the pennant was what baseball was *about*.

(613 posts)Main issue is that most sports teams are run by billionaires with politics like the Kochs: "I got mine, screw you". Take money from taxpayers for stadiums, etc.

(18,656 posts)what is the point of the NBA? From the start of the season everyone knows who the champs will be; an upset by an underdog is telegraphed months in advance...

(10,893 posts)way, but you never know for sure what could happen during a season (or even the playoffs). Frequently, teams get unlucky with injuries and/or a lack of rest. Sometimes they're missing one of their coaches. Sometimes, suspensions happen which subtract key players from a game (the Warriors experienced this first-hand last year with Draymond). And the list goes on.

(20,192 posts)Couldn't they give each team 100 points and have them play for 10 minutes?

(58,724 posts)Though sometimes those 20 point comebacks in the second half are fun.

Over the years I realized I really don't care much for baseball and pro football.
But why bother until the tourney starts?
The I much prefer college and high school now.
