(2,959 posts)times a week. This was in the 70's in the Oakland, CA hills. People didn't lock their dogs up much back than. We also never locked our doors. He'd come in through the back door, sniff around, greet us, our corgi Tammy who liked him. He'd have some of her water and a bite to eat then flop down on the floor much like the dog in the photo. He'd hang around, get some attention and eventually head out for greater parts.
One day I was walking home from downtown through Piedmont, about a mile from my house, when the dane ran up to me wagging his tale. His owner was outside gardening and was very surprised. She said "He's usually not that friendly, he must know you." I introduced myself and told her the above story. Which she found sort of mortifying but amusing. She and the dog and I got in her car and drove over to my family's house so we could meet each other. The visits continued and we got the dog's preferred brand of dog biscuits. This went on for around 5 more years until the dog got too old. I can't recall the great dane's name but he sure was a neat dog and wonderful guest.

(10,098 posts)When I was a kid there was a dog that lived on the other side of the block, "Princess", she would walk around the block by herself. She was a scruffy looking little thing, some kind of terrier I think, but was cute and we would pet her a bit and she would be on her way.
Peace

(39 posts)They're wonderful animals -- gentle and sweet -- but very definitely "specialty" dogs which require proper training and control, and a large shovel.
