That's the old sad grill in the background there. It went from trusty to rusty. RIP my fire flower!
But this new one is a beaut! I'm just curing the grates right now.
Also just decided the name of the new grill. It is named, SUPER NINTENDO.

(7,634 posts)My wife an I are not full vegan but we do try to eat less meat. Our daughter and son in law are vegan and when they visit they always cook fabulous vegan dishes.

(10,345 posts)For vegan grilling it really comes down to the products you use.
Regarding meat, a steak is a steak.
But regarding vegan meat, a tofurky brand sausage won't act the same as a field roast brand. They use different processes and ingredients to make their products happen.
So alot of it comes down to product recommendations, then advice on how to cook them specifically.
Today, we're trying the phenomenal Beyond Meat Beyond Burger on the grill. It's proved VERY successful on the skillet inside, we're eager to see how well it works on the grill.

(34,136 posts)My brother in law gave us a little grill similar to your old one when he upgraded. If we use it much, I've been considering upgrading to one similar to your new one.
Yesterday we tried to grill and couldn't get the charcoal started. Last week we bought a tiny bag of charcoal that was set up so you just tear open the bag, light the bag and in a half hour you have a nice bed of charcoal ready to put meat on. This week they were out of those and whatever my husband bought just wouldn't catch for us.
I see you have a starter chimney - I'd like to know how well that works, too. After our debacle yesterday I see why people go for propane grills - but I'd rather use charcoal!

But YES THE CHIMNEY START IS AN ESSENTIAL PIECE OF CHARCOAL GRILLING, that we can assure you.
Only took 15 minutes and using a Infrared thermometer we detected temperatures as high as 950 degrees!
We're currently grilling veggies right now and the grill easily jumped up to 400 consistently.
Totally recommend!

(34,136 posts)Not even a few bucks for a chimney starter. I've been checking out charcoal starter bricks made from sawdust and paraffin wax. I may buy a pack of them to use with the charcoal we have now.
We talked about it and I suggested that we try the starter bricks. If those work, we will use the free grill this summer. If we use it much and want a better one, we can get one on clearance at the end of the summer. The decision between a propane or charcoal grill will be hashed out over the summer every time we use the free grill.

(34,136 posts)I've been watching YouTube videos on starting charcoal - chimneys seem to be the way to go. He just hates to spend money on a free thing. That said, since he spent over an hour trying to start the fire, he ended up going to the store and spending $6 on a rotisserie chicken that was overdone and dried out.
One thing - my husband kept closing the lid on the grill before the briquettes were going - I think he was smothering the fire by doing that. It drove me nuts but all I could do was walk away. After almost forty years of marriage I can tell the signs when he is frustrated and will not listen!

(7,634 posts)no need for starter fluid. just newspaper and a chimney full of coal. a few minutes later they are all red and you can dump them in the grill.
