These two horses moved in next door . Their owners don't live there, but they left these horses in the pasture. I have a bunch of raw carrots my daughter brought and I don't really eat them much. Would it be okay for me to give them a couple of carrots, or might that mess up their bowels? I heard that you aren't supposed to change their diet & that it can knot up their bowels or something like that.

(3,867 posts)carrots are nutritious for horses.
I double checked before responding.

(7,637 posts)reward them during training. They love them. As long as you dont dump a 200 lbs bin of carrots in the field they will appreciate. You can hand it to them, they will love it.

(3,867 posts)but they mostly have soft lips & are gentle. I have run across a biter though, but I think it is unusual

(6 posts)I'd love to have your neighbors. Put the carrot on the palm of your hand and keep your hand flat. You will get to feel their nibbles and you are less likely to get bitten.

(7,981 posts)Check with the owners to see if it's okay to feed the horses
and if so, offer the carrot to the horse with a flat palm so it doesn't grab a finger by mistake.
Do they have a source of water there?
luvMIdog
(2,533 posts)that's a good idea. It's hard to catch them there. I may just leave a note on the fence. & Yes they have water

(14,648 posts)I'd want to know if someone was treating my horse because we already give her plenty of treats. Yes, we hand feed her and she is spoiled rotten. Still, I want to know what she's eating. She would happily take a carrot from a stranger, and even more happily take a ginger snap or apple or pear.

(14,648 posts)I caught my husband sitting next to her eating them and she had her head over his shoulder, sort of begging. Next thing, he gave her one. So I told him that if he's going to feed them to her, we're going to start getting the store-brand ones. I have the cutest pic of them both "reading" the box. Turns out that the dogs like them too, and at $2/box, they're a lot cheaper than dog or horse snacks. Now I put them in a sealed container and leave them on a table in the barn. Husbands, hounds, and horses, all happy with the same cookie.

(115,869 posts)I have cats. I don't think they like ginger snaps. One of them likes peanut butter, though.
