The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo worried about my kitten. I think he has wet FIP.

He rebounded so well after his initial URI, but today his eyes are goopy and swollen, and his belly feels awfully full to me. The vet can't see him until tomorrow.
(This is one of the kittens I found under the porch, and whose photographs I've shared on DU a couple of times.)
Update: he's ok! worms and a treatable infection.
Edited to add: The greatest page? Thanks for all the love you've shown this litter! Here is another from the same litter, a timid girl.

(8,208 posts)If it's FIP, it's 100% fatal. I'll be happy with any other diagnosis. (Herpes and worms! Please let it be herpes and worms!)

(8,208 posts)I'm just hoping for anything other than FIP. Such a swollen little belly.

(47,209 posts)I need to do that again, if I forget for a couple of weeks they get the eyes.

(804 posts)My rescues are SO much better because of it, even the one the vet recommended I have put to sleep...13 years ago.
Good luck to your little one! Please keep us updated.

(8,208 posts)I'll be thrilled if my little guy lives as long as your miracle rescue. I've been researching lysine because of this thread; I can't believe I've never heard of this before.
bettyellen
(47,209 posts)Even mix it in, i sprinkle some in then bag of dry but also pinches here and there right in top of wet, and they're fine with it.
I also got Taurine to supplement the grain free frozen rabbit dog food I get because that's the only differerence and the dog food is so much cheaper for the same brand.

(8,208 posts)I am going to use lysine as he apparently is going to be vulnerable to URI's.
Thank you for the well wishes!

(47,209 posts)It spreads immediately if they're shedding it though tears but is almost inevitable that it will to spread to each cat in the household. When they catch it, it can be like a bad flu- and the cat suddenly goes off food and becomes lethargic. You'd have to insist that the vet waste no time (for $$ tests while cat starves) and give you an appetite stimulant. There's a few good ones that are human anti- depressants that are cheap and easy to split the pill. My kitten Pats (who also had the worst worms! OMG his poops had live ones wiggling out it) almost died from the kitten flu, except I had a caring vet who knew how much the cat would suffer if we waited for tests.
femmedem
(8,208 posts)I would never have thought to ask for an appetite stimulant.
It could be herpes but probably calici. Two weeks ago he had awful sores in his mouth, but I guess herpes can cause that, too.

(8,208 posts)Lysine wouldbe good for him, as I think he will always have a latent virus.
CurtEastPoint

(8,208 posts)And whatever virus is giving him eye problems. I'm so happy! Thanks for the well wishes.

(8,208 posts)Worms and an eye infection. No temperature. The little guy is going to be ok!

(5,075 posts)Sometimes they do get FIP after a URI, but I hope not. There are other possibilities, as you say. Hold him close and love him.

(8,208 posts)No FIP, just a belly full of worms.
The vet who had seen him when he came in two weeks ago was thrilled to see how much weight he'd put on and to see his mouth sores healed up. She was somewhat surprised he pulled through.

(9,275 posts)We lost my beloved Freddie (my DU alias) at age 10 to wet FIP. Vet said it's a virus he was carrying dormant for years. It will kill either young kittens or cats 10 and over. Freddie was a rescue kitten so he must have been exposed before we got him. It's been a year and a half and we've since gotten 2 rescue cats but I still miss my big orange lump o'purr.

(111,367 posts)and both conditions need to be taken care of. You're going to have to deworm all of them along with making sure that no flea has a chance of reintroducing worm eggs/larvae.
I hope the kitty bounces back soon.

(8,208 posts)The season hadn't hit here yet when I brought them in. But I came home from the vet with flea medication today.

(8,208 posts)She's finally getting tamer, too. She's never been aggressive but she's always been the most timid of the litter.
