(12,157 posts)My friends dad grew water melons for extra money. He always planted a few yellows that some people would pay a premium price.

(12,858 posts)In OK in late 50s or early 60s. My uncle brought it to my gramma's. A big surprise.
I didn't like it. I always have always liked watermelon, and the yellow stuff didn't taste right, let alone not looking right.
NB: Red watermelon eaten in CA in the 60s didn't taste like OK or TX watermelon. A BIG disappointment.

(34,195 posts)BEHIND THE WATERMELON: THE YELLOW FLESH
https://www.whataboutwatermelon.com/index.php/2009/07/behind-the-watermelon-the-yellow-flesh/
Imagine biting into an apple and discovering the inside is blue. Or cutting into an orange and seeing a nice shade of green. It might freak you out a little bit, right? Maybe make you think twice about eating it?
Thats what the Yellow Flesh watermelon is like. The normally pinkish-red flesh were used to seeing in watermelon is, well, yellow. But it shouldnt freak you out because its supposed to be that way. And you should definitely eat it because its delicious.
The Yellow Flesh also known as the Yellow Crimson, and the almost identical twin of the red-fleshed Crimson Sweet is described by some as having a sweeter, almost honey-like taste than regular watermelons. Ive never had a yellow flesh watermelon, but based on that description, Im now dying to try one.
Related to the Yellow Flesh is the Desert King Yellow watermelon (with a yellowish, light green exterior and prized for being able to grow in dry conditions), the Yellow Flesh Black Diamond watermelon, the Tastigold watermelon and a few other similar varieties. You can read more about the yellow fleshed family here.
Whats funny is, from the outside, the Yellow Flesh looks just like any other watermelon. It might actually make for a nice little prank, substituting your mother or cousins traditional watermelon with one of these varieties and then enjoying the show while they cut into it for the first time. Okay, maybe its not that funny, but Id get a chuckle out of it.

(26,109 posts)It was a great treat!
The taste of the yellow ones found in stores nowadays is not as good, imo.

(34,136 posts)And realized it was MUCH better than the seedless variety.
Monticello, Florida used to be a huge producer of watermelons for seeds and many of the locals still grow watermelons descended from those older varieties. They sell them on the side of the road for $3-4 for HUGE watermelons.
The flesh of those watermelons is intensely red, not really sweeter than the seedless types but with much more flavor to it. Of course there are a lot of seeds, but that just means next year we will probably have volunteer watermelon plants growing where we throw our organics!
