I've Been Visited By A Hummingbird Every Day For The Last Week

There are several plants in the both the front & back yards that are in his "rotation". I've seen him(?) and several others many times throughout the summer. But lately this one has been flying right up to me, hoovering as if to check me out, and coming close enough for me to touch, whenever I sit on the porch. Today he was less than two feet away for at least a minute. Never fails to lift my mood.

You'd see quite a few I'd bet. We've had a feeding station up at the kitchen window for 35 years now . . 5 minutes won't go by w/o a visit. The nectar you can make is so simple, sugar & boiling water, I make a quart of it and refrigerate it, replenishing the station with fresh every other day.

....He flutters in mid-air, then flies away for a few seconds, only to return again. I call him "Eddie Spaghetti Hummingbird". He seems to like that name. It fits him. I haven't seen him lately, since it's been so hot. But I expect him back when the weather cools down. Such a bright and happy little guy. At least I think it's a guy. How can you tell with birds?!

The adult males have an iridescent red patch on their throats. It's directional so sunlight has to catch it for it to flash. If you're out west, all bets are off; many different species show up there.

Mourning Doves.
We have 3 at a time chasing each other. Then they come right up to your face checking you out!
Our last place, a third floor apt. I had lantana on the porch and had customers all day during the summer. One time I had a hairband on and one went up on my head to see what it was all about!
These gifts of nature are certainly mood-lifters!

One day, I pulled into the driveway in my bright, shiny, new red car and parked close to the house (not too far from the feeders), and before I was out of the car, several of them were hovering around the car--like they were saying, "WHOA! Get a load of THAT flower!"

Went to a local nursery before my July birthday to get some herbs, pots and like that.
At the checkout desk was a lattice panel w/ this cool red, white and blue stiffly shaped shabby chic bow wall decor. I added it to our purchases. Once home we hung it on our back fence, near the area where the hummers feed. One day sitting out on the patio, a little one flew right to the bow and hovered! It was a darling sight!
They prolly thot your new car was "lookit this gigantic manna from heaven we came upon"!😄

somebody nearby may have not filled a feeder or took it down - they are pushy, aggressive little bastards and will let you know it is time for a refill!

my son got these two with his cell phone! (usually there are at least a dozen flitting around this feeder most of the day)

It sounds wonderful, don't get those here, or only passing. I visit Colorado sometimes and love seeing them.

Peace

And can't live as far north as I am, but do live in Southeast Alaska. I'll never forget during one Iraq/Afghanistan buildup lots of years ago, we were getting an influx of about 2000 new troops & families, none from the area.

Walmart brought in a tractor-trailer of hummingbird feeders, seed for hummingbird gardens, "special" nectar, etc. Needless to say, residents laughed and shunned them. The poor military folks bought 'em up.

Then a bunch of us got together and wrote a letter to the editor about this.

Walmart refunded the full price to anyone who had their receipt. Only 20 signatures, a letter to the editor w/c.c. to Walmart manager....

and occasionally get a good shot through the window or out the glass door to the deck where that feeder hangs.

I watch this site in the spring to know when to put out my feeders (end of March this year for NC) http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

Caught one shot in May when the sun was shining on that gorgeous ruby throat.
