Our twelve year old son is in a committed relationship

Love has struck and it has hit hard with our son. Yesterday our son invited his friend a nice young lady ,from seventh grade to come over and spend the afternoon and to have dinner. My wife and I kind of new about the romantic attraction because of our thirteen year old busting his brothers ass over this young lady.

So yesterday our son goes I need to go to Walmart and I took him , he wanted to buy her a gift. So at the store he told dad and his brother to get lost. Or you guys walk around I don't need to hear it from you two is more like it. He would not even show us the gift in the car on the way home. So we get home hey dude I ask you wanna play guitar or maybe some chess. No I have to get ready he jumps in the shower hits the roll on deodorant real heavy and my cologne. He even requested that I change out of my cargo shorts and at least put on a pair of nice jeans. Nobody needs to see your chicken legs dad, I said to my wife this is serious. I changed I even wore socks with my sandals, first impressions are lasting.

So she arrives we meet her mother nice lady. And the two lovebirds head down to the family room the boog the chocolate lab went along with them. We tell her mom yea pick her up at 7 pm , now we all sit down to dinner and our son puts on some Scottish music he is really into his Scottish ancestry. As his mother lived in Scotland until she was sixteen. Well at dinner the young lady showed us the gift it is a necklace with a basketball and baseball on it. As they both play basketball and baseball. So after dinner as the Scottish ballad the Bonnie banks of Loch Lomond was playing. I said hey dude your mother used to sing this to you and your sisters as infants. And I asked you know what I used to sing to you kids their is no beer in heaven the polka cuz you are part polish. I just got a look I said hey let's play a polka then I got no dad. And we found out that they will both be sitting on the bus to and from school this is serious.

as was your son's request for you to change out of your cargo shorts.

Another real life tale from a terrific storyteller. Thanks, TEB.

Most kids start to pair up. It will be unusual if this particular relationship lasts past 13.

You probably already had the birds and bees talk, but now it's time to have the responsibility and self-discipline talk with your son. They are both way too young to be parents goes without saying. And time to talk frankly with the girl's parents too. They may be good kids, but they are still just children.

I was lucky, my two 30 something boys (men) grew up when the thing was group dating. I don't think either of them had a "date" until college but they all used to have what they called dates in groups. Still, they fall hard at that age. This is a sweet story.

She walked up to me one day and told me I was her boyfriend now and I needed to go the Ben Franklin and get her a bracelet with her name (Carrie) engraved on it. It was about 8 dollars. Which was about $7.50 more than I had (we didn't get paid for chores in my house - chores was what you did to keep from getting beat).

So for about a week we talked in the hall between classes and I held her hand walking to class once and she finally figured out I wasn't heading to the Ben Franklin store for her bracelet any time soon so that relationship was over.

It was pretty neat being a boyfriend for a week though lol. I got better at it.

When kids have a common interest such as sports or music they have something to talk about and bond over. I think it makes for a more mature friendship, and something to grow on.

When my son was in grade school and high school I never got to meet his "girlfriends" and I wasn't even sure if he had any. By the time he got to college he had lots of friends but I never was introduced to anyone important enough to call a girlfriend. Then finally in his senior year of college I was introduced to a nice young lady who was also a senior and in the same marching band with my son. I told him I really liked the young woman and my son said, "Well I'm glad you like her because I'm pretty sure I'm going to marry her."

That hit me like a ton of bricks! But they did finish their senior year and graduate, and by a year later they were engaged. A year after that they were married and now it's been 22 years, they're still happy together with one son. Sometimes things do work out.

I agree on Scottish part with the Scottish ballads and his mother. But yet I was not allowed to bring up a polish polka in which I do not like but I mentioned it to aggravate him. I do it out of love and at 51 years old I found out along time ago always love your children but it is ok to aggravate them.
