All manner of people are allowed to run for office including Socialists,Communists etc.
Most have very little chance of success but they have the freedom to run on their political platform..

The DC Council is made up of 8 local ward seats, 4 at-large seats and a separately-elected chairperson. Of those 13 seats, 2 may not be held by the majority party...the majority party is always the Democrats. (They consistently sweep the ward races and hold the chair meaning that two of the four at-large seats cannot be held by Democrats.) They don't even nominate anybody in those two at-large races. Typically, those seats get filled by either Republicans or by Democrats that change their registered affiliation to Independent. It typically only takes 25-30% of the votes cast to win the at-large races because they tend to be an 8 or 9 candidate free-for-all. However, it would be more than viable for someone with a well put-together campaign and name recognition to run and win in those races as a Socialist or a DC Statehood-Green (abbreviated STG) candidate.

I'm hoping that Eugene can be that candidate because he's smart, eloquent and likeable.
