In papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court on Monday, Lowell Barton, vice president of Local 1010, said Roland Bedwell of Local 175 uses 'violent physical assaults and his ties to organized crime' to steal union jobs.

A top official in a construction labor union sued a group of rivals Monday, charging that they have mob ties and use violence to steal work from other unions.

Lowell Barton, vice president of Local 1010 of the Laborers' Union International, says Roland Bedwell, the business manager of Local 175 of the United Plant & Production Workers, slammed him in the face with a hardhat and threatened to "f--- him up" if he came near any more job sites.

Barton says he was on the Bronx site, where a landscaping company was installing pavers and cobblestones on Zarega Ave., to object to the fact that the workers were supposed to be from his union but instead they were members of Bedwell's.

"Local 175 was aware of and had express knowledge of Bedwell's propensity for violent physical assaults and his ties to organized crime," Barton says in papers filed in Manhattan Supreme Court.

Money remains the root of all evil. Money destroys union and brotherhood. Power corrupts, absolutely. Anyone who has watched the "Godfather" saga understands 'the mob' is quintessential capitalism. Wherever the exploiters can gather, they will exploit.
