I had really no knowledge at all of family-run theaters, though I've long enjoyed community and repertory cinemas (The Nickelodeon in South Carolina, the Avalon in Washington, D.C.).

What rather fascinated me was the idea that the theater plays such a role in the life of the downtown -- true of many arts venues. Here in the States there is such emphasis on money, money, money and on moving with the times, when community and quality of life maybe ought to be coming more to the fore.
