In order to do research for her book, former LA Times reporter and screenwriter (under contract at Warner's)Virginia Kellogg pulled some strings to incarcerate herself in a woman's prison. The victim of a slow-acting poison tracks down his own killer.
Dir: Rudolph Maté

The scene in which Bigelow runs in panic through the streets after learning he has been poisoned was a stolen shot. The pedestrians had no idea a movie was being made and no warning that Edmond O'Brien would be plowing through them.

A woman infiltrates the mob to find her father's killer.

The revival combination of Flight Lieutenant (1942) and Corregidor (1943) was somebody's idea of a "commemoration" of the anniversary of Pearl Harbor, the first week of December 1949, at which time "Destination: Murder" was filmed.

Dir: Robert Aldrich

BW-106 mins, CC,

The Kefauver Commission, a federal unit dedicated to investigating corrupting influences in the 1950s, singled this out as 1955's number one menace to American youth. Because of this, Robert Aldrich felt compelled to conduct a writing campaign for the free speech rights of independent film-makers.

A dangerous madman kidnaps two businessmen on a hunting trip.
Dir: Ida Lupino
Cast: Edmond O'Brien, Frank Lovejoy, William Talman
BW-71 mins, CC,

In an interview Talman recalled an incident that happened shortly after the release of The Hitch-Hiker (1953), in which he gave a chilling portrayal of escaped murderer and serial killer Emmett Meyers. He was driving his convertible in Los Angeles with the top down, and he stopped at a red light. Another driver in a convertible who was stopped next to him stared at him for a few seconds, then said, "You're the hitchhiker, right?" Talman nodded, indicating that he was. The other driver got out of his car, went over to Talman's car and slapped him across the face, then got back in his car and drove off. In recalling the story, Talman said, "You know, I never won an Academy Award but I guess that was about as close as I ever will come to one."

2:45 AM -- The Blue Dahlia (1946)
A veteran fights to prove he didn't kill his cheating wife.
Dir: George Marshall
Cast: Alan Ladd, Veronica Lake, William Bendix
BW-100 mins, CC,

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay -- Raymond Chandler

Just after the fight scene between Alan Ladd and the two thugs who kidnapped him, one of the thugs is seen soaking his broken leg in a round tub. That wasn't in the script; the actor had actually broken his leg filming the fight and, without consulting screenwriter Raymond Chandler, director George Marshall rewrote the script to have the character break his leg as well.

4:30 AM -- Raw Deal (1948)
When the gangster for whom he took the rap welches, a convict breaks out of prison to get revenge.
Dir: Anthony Mann
Cast: Dennis O'Keefe, Claire Trevor, Marsha Hunt

She appears in DOA as Frank Bigelow's (Edmund O'Brien) love interest.

A fairly low budget, but one of the classics nonetheless.

Certainly one of her first roles.

And this is one of the more weird noir classics, maybe THE noir classic. It takes the concept of a MacGuffin to a rather high level which even Hitchcock did not achieve with a figurine with a belly full of microfilm. Aldrich's is a world ending MacGuffin.

Highly recommended.
