Gable and Lancaster with a good supporting cast.

Story was written by Ned Beach, who was an officer in subs during the entire WWII.

BTW, a fairly accurate depiction of WWII sub warfare. One thing not portrayed, the silent service had -- by far -- the best food of any other service. They regularly had freshly baked bread on midnight watch and freshly baked pie for dessert. Steaks were common at dinner. These guys were meat and potatoes folks. They ate very well. The SS Tang had an ice cream machine.

Often not enough. The sub service suffered the highest casualties of any service. It was a very dangerous enterprise. Regardless, they put over 6,000,000 tons of Japanese shipping to the bottom. These dudes were all heroes and they were all volunteers, every one of them.
