While Spencer Tracy, Eddie Albert, Cary Grant and Brian Donlevy were all considered for the lead role, Samuel Goldwyn was determined that Gary Cooper get the part.

Trivia: While filming the movie, Teresa Wright, who played Gehrig's wife Eleanor Gehrig, wore the actual bracelet which Lou gave to Eleanor on their fourth anniversary. Eleanor brought the bracelet to the set to be used in the movie. The bracelet is made up of 17 metal medallions celebrating the seven World Championships and six All-Star game appearances Gehrig made. Warner executives wanted George Raft to play Sam Spade in The Maltese Falcon, but Raft rejected the role because he did not want to work with an inexperienced director (it was Huston's directorial debut). Huston said it was "much to my secret delight" that the role went to Humphrey Bogart.

IMO Raft was an overrated actor and would have ruined the film.

No link. I'm recalling an interview with Huston from a Bogart biography that aired on PBS many years ago.
