Trivia: Richard Dreyfuss won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his role as Elliot Garfield. At 30, he was the youngest actor to win this Oscar. This record was broken by Adrien Brody when he won the Best Actor Oscar in 2003 for his lead role in The Pianist (2002) at age 29.

Trivia: The disastrous production of Shakespeare's "Richard III," in which Elliot Garfield (Richard Dreyfuss) portrays the title character as gay, was based on an actual production that Marsha Mason was in (as Lady Anne) and told her husband, Neil Simon, about. Like the production in the film, it took place at Joseph Papp's Public Theatre in New York in 1974, and starred Michael Moriarty.

Trivia: In the apartment, Elliot and Rhonda claim they are rehearsing Act 1, Scene 4 of Richard III. However, neither of their characters appear in that scene.

Trivia: When Quinn Cummings pulls the old style flip-top off the can of soda it breaks leaving a sharp piece sticking out of the opening of the can. Quinn sees it, but continues the scene with barely a flinch.

Trivia: This was the first film in which Lionel Barrymore played gruff-voiced but soft-hearted Dr. Gillespie. One of MGM studio chief Louis B. Mayer's favorite actors, Barrymore was cast in this role after he had played Judge Hardy in the first of the studio's Andy Hardy movies, A Family Affair. Mayer was determined that, as long as he lived, Barrymore would be employed by the studio and when Lionel's health confined him to a wheelchair, the part of Gillespie was re-written to accommodate Barrymore's condition. He would go on to play Gillespie in 14 more films.

Trivia: Near the end of shooting, Orson Welles told Columbia executives that he wanted a complete set repainted on a Saturday for shooting on Monday. Columbia exec Jack Fier told Welles it was impossible, because of union rules and the expense that would be incurred by calling in a crew of painters to work on a weekend. Welles and several friends broke into the paint department that Saturday and repainted the set themselves, and when they were finished they hung a banner on the set that read "The Only Thing We Have to Fear is Fier Himself." When the union painters arrived at work on Monday and saw that the set had been repainted by someone else, they refused to work, threw a picket line around the studio and threatened to stay on strike until a union crew was paid triple time for the work that had been done (which was why Fier had refused to authorize the work in the first place). To placate the union, Fier agreed to pay them what they wanted but put the cost on Welles' personal bill. In addition, he had the union painters paint a banner saying "All's Well That Ends Welles."

Crowe liked the take as-is and kept it in the final cut.

Trivia: Stillwater's songs were written by Peter Frampton (who also had a small part in the film), Cameron Crowe, and his ex-wife Nancy Wilson of the rock band Heart. The music acknowledgments credit Russell Hammond and Stillwater as if they were real authors and performers.

It has a special place for my wife and I. We bought a VCR just so we could record it (off Showtime). It was the very first movie we ever recorded on VCR and we played the hell out of it. (The second thing we recorded was "The 25th anniversary Tonight Show With Johnny Carson." We watched that a lot, too. It includes the Ed Ames tomahawk throw. Enjoy.)
