TCM Schedule for Thursday, September 13 -- TCM Spotlight: Mack Sennett

Today TCM is celebrating the birthday of Claudette Colbert, born Emilie Claudette Chauchoin on September 13, 1903, in Saint-Mandé, Val-de-Marne, France. We have a nice selection of her films, including her Oscar-winning role in the delightful It Happened One Night (1934). Don't miss it! In prime time, this month's theme of the films of Mack Sennett continues. Enjoy!

She was summoned from a train station to pick up her Academy Award.), Best Director -- Frank Capra, Best Writing, Adaptation -- Robert Riskin, and Best Picture

Friz Freleng's unpublished memoirs mention that this was one of his favorite films, and that it contains at least three things upon which the character "Bugs Bunny" was based: - The character Oscar Shapely's (Roscoe Karns) personality - The manner in which Peter Warne (Clark Gable) was eating carrots and talking quickly at the same time - An imaginary character mentioned once to frighten Oscar Shapely named "Bugs Dooley." Other mentions of "Looney Tunes" characters from the film include Alexander Andrews (Walter Connolly) and King Westley (Jameson Thomas) being the inspirations for Yosemite Sam and Pepé LePew, respectively.

When Cecil B. DeMille was in pre-production on this film, he asked to screen the original version, Cleopatra with Theda Bara. No prints could be found on in Los Angeles, so a copy of it was borrowed from the Fox office in New York. After DeMille viewed the film it was sent back to Little Ferry, New Jersey. On July 9, 1937, a fire at the storage facility destroyed almost all of Fox's known archived prints, most likely including Cleopatra. The screening for DeMille's company, on February 15, 1934, may have been the last time anyone saw the legendary film.

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy are thrown into a cell to await execution at sunrise. Stan discovers that he can strum his bed springs and play it like a harp. This film was originally developed as a Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy vehicle, but was re-scripted after Stan Laurel, whose contract with Hal Roach had run out, declined to re-sign with the producer. Hardy's contract was still in force, and the team believed that if they waited until it expired, they could re-sign as a team and be in a stronger bargaining position. Ultimately that is what happened.
