I appreciate these "historically informed" performances so much more than when baroque and other early music is performed using modern instruments, tunings, forces, and techniques.

I started listening to baroque music back in the mid 1980s after I read an article about "period instrument" performances trying to perform the music in the way that it would likely have been performed in its time. I was intrigued by this and purchased a few period instrument performances and compared them to highly regarded "modern" performances. The difference was a revelation to me. The period instrument performances were more open and transparent- each of the different instruments could be more clearly heard. Hearing the famous "Pachelbel's Canon" for the first time, played on instruments of its time, tuned accordingly and played in the style brought tears of joy to my eyes.

I became an obsessive collector of such recordings and I do mean obsessive. I bought nearly everything I could find and joined the Musical Heritage Society to purchase what they had available in their catalogue. I had multiple recordings of my favorite works by different ensembles. This obsession lasted perhaps 5 years and then slowly tapered off once I realized I had more music than I could listen to in a year if I listened to a different CD every day. Now I buy only a few CDs a year but I still enjoy listening to music and do so every day.
