Music Appreciation
Related: About this forumSo I saw Rod Stewart this weekend....
Great show! But disappointed.
Im a huge fan. But mainly his pre-Do You Think Im Sexy material. Mainly his Jeff Beck Group stuff and his Faces stuff. His first foray into solo stuff.
I knew there was going to be a lot of songs performed that I could do without. Tonights The Night, Forever Young, etc. And thats cool. I mean, they are great songs. But I was there for Maggie May, Every Picture Tells a Story, Hot Legs, Shape of Things (probably not but a slim possibility), and of course Stay With Me. He did play Maggie and Every Picture. And I was thrilled! And they played the stuff that I could do without. And then they left the stage. And Im like, here we go man! Hes gonna finish with Hot Legs and Stay with Me! This is gonna be awesome!
And then
.
No encore! Curses! Foiled again! LOL!
Dude is 78 years old. And he killed. But damnit man! Really? No Stay with Me?

(2,861 posts)There were so many people there wondering when he was going to play "Owner of a Lonely Heart". I was like...
Steve Howe wasn't even in that version of Yes. I was not disappointed though. He played a lot of the really good early Yes tunes. I know where you're coming from with Rod Stewart. I wouldn't mind seeing him for all the same songs that you went for, but those other tunes, not so much. My wife and I are going to see a few shows this year. In a couple of weeks we're going to see "Steely Don" with "The Gill-gles".

My brother saw Yes in the round at least once.

(2,861 posts)I got to see them on that tour back in the 80s though. I never did get to see Steve Howe until last year. He's such an amazing guitar player.

(65,118 posts)I was ok with the song, but it wasn't even my favorite song off that album.
But, that horn blast sample, I just had to have.
So, I actually sampled it off the CD onto my Akai rackmount sampler.
I really wanted to be able to use that sound effect.

(11,802 posts)I mean he was really fucking good. Especially for a 78 year old man.
I knew there was no way Id hear Judys Farm or Three Button Hand Me Down or Too Much Woman. But no Stay With Me? Aaaaaaaaaa. Soooo disappointed! But que sera, baby. Still got to finally see one of my top 5 singers so
.ya know. No regrets.
Enjoy the Dan/Eagles show! Ive never really been a fan of either but tall respect for both. I hear its an amazing show so Im sure youll have a good time!

(2,861 posts)I'm not really a country music fan, but I like that song. Back when I was playing bass for a living I did a short stint with a country band. I'll play country music for money as long as I don't have to listen to it.
One band the surprised me recently was Lover Boy. My wife really loved Styx and they opened for Styx. The singer was a little shaky on the first song, but once he warmed up he was hitting all the high notes. I wasn't really into them back in the 80s, but it was neat to hear all these old songs that I had forgotten about. We're trying to get out and see all the older acts that we can before it's too late.

(2,828 posts)Rod was going to play the Arena in San Antonio. So I grabbed my 4 year old daughter, a tent, and a couple of big pillows, and we spent the night in line on the sidewalk to be among the first to buy tickets the next morning. Had as much of a blast that night waiting for the ticket window to open as we did at the concert! (LOL)

(11,046 posts)Dan didn't play "Everything You Did" - I just don't understand how you don't play the song with the line "Turn Up the Eagles" when you're touring with the Eagles!
Otherwise I heard it was a very good show.
As to people calling out for Owner of a Lonely Heart at a Howe show, not only did he not play on it, but you can tell he actively hated playing it whenever Yes did it.
That reminds me of the last Genesis show I was at, when the couple next to me complained they didn't do Sussudio or Against All Odds.

(2,861 posts)My wife and I did get to see Steely Dan a few years ago before Walter Becker passed away. It was a great show and I love most of their music. My wife is a big Eagles fan so we're going mostly for them. I do like a lot of their songs, but not everything. It's going to be a great time either way. It will be a fun Saturday date night for us both.

(11,046 posts)I just can't do it now. If it was billed as Fagen, that would be one thing. But that's the difference between playing 2000 seat theaters and playing arenas with the Eagles.

(65,118 posts)Was supposed to see them at a big community college in the Chicago suburbs.
It was to be an early date after a break on their first tour.
During the break they decided they didn't want to tour anymore.
It was years until they performed live again & I never made it to see them.

(182,857 posts)The summer before Glenn Frey passed away. John Paul Jones arena in Charlottesville. Our seats were right behind the sound board. Incredible sound and I re-gained an appreciation for them.

(182,857 posts)Basically crooner covers. Hes had a big third act in his career with those. His record company laughed at him for wanting to do those so he went to a small label and they basically printed money.
Replicating Faces stuff could be hard. Man what a band.
I feel ya. I went and saw Dylan last year and he played nothing from the old days. Great band but I couldnt understand a single word. It was my daughters idea. She and her roommate saw that he was playing the big grand theater in Richmond so both families went. Oh well, I saw Dylan.

(11,802 posts)Willie Nelson opened. Which was pretty sick. But we left halfway through Bob for the same reasons
He did do one song I never heard but didnt seem crooner style. He killed Etta James Id Rather Go Blind though. I mean it was sick. I was blown away. Definitely a high point for me.

(9,382 posts)He was just spectacular. The best show, I think, was at Berkeley Community Theater. In the middle of "Around the Plynth," Rod and Ronnie Lane went backstage and came out with what looked initially like a banner. It was a flag. A Holiday Inn flag. Damn, did they steal it? They unfurled it and we all went wild.
The Faces were so much fun to see.
