It parallels a part of my life--except she wasn't a dancer, and it wasn't a club, and it wasn't downtown. She was the night desk clerk at the student union at my college; many nights my last year I found myself at the union door at closing time, and wound up walking the lady back to her dorm after she closed. Those were magical moments for me, and we are still friends 45 years later.
