My radio station plays this song quite often every day. I find the lyrics super annoying. To me, it sounds like a Conservative yearning back to supposedly better times. I looked up the comments on youtube, but they were all complimentary. So, I guess it's just me?
The lyrics claim there are no soda fountains, five and dimes, and nobody's taking cash. I live in a rural area. We have a soda fountain and Northville has a famous five and dime.

A few of our local restaurants take cash only.
He laments:
Ain't no kids in the front yard
No football in the street
No lemonade stand
No treehouse in the trees
My neighbors' kids are in the front yard. No football in the street, but definitely basketball. And there are really cool treehouses.
His next complaint:
What happened to no sir, yes ma'am
Looking folks in the eye
To family and the good Lord
And thanking him every night
When I'm in public, people hold doors open. They call me ma'am which makes me feel old. And mentioning the good Lord and thanking him every night sounds like the Christian Nationalists trying to reimagine that this country was rooted in Christianity which it wasn't. The Founding Fathers made that a point.
His next claim:
Ain't nobody on the front porch no rocking in the chair
In the summer, I LIVE on my front porch. People I don't even know look for me and beep and wave.
I don't know why but this song just hits me so wrong. I end up turning the channel whenever it comes on.
