Related: About this forumName your top 3 rock guitarists,
Mine would be, of course number 1:
1. David Gilmour of Pink Floyd.
2. Eric Clapton of Cream fame, and number 3 would be.........
3. Eddie Van Halen of Van Halen.

All because they have a unique sound to their work as well as virtuosity.

(11,028 posts)They played separate sets, then played together on Crimson material. Levins band had Pat Mastelloto on drums, and Belew had Danny Carey subbing. The drum duet leading into lndiscipline was unreal. And I am ride or die for Bill Bruford.

These might not be the very best but they are the guitarist I grew up with.

(65,061 posts)...because of his prodigious technique, melodic sense, & harmonic sophistication.
...EVH (naturally) for his pioneering, his tone, and his playfulness,
& Elliot Easton (The Cars) for his versatility & his great skill of putting songs within songs. (You can sing his solos.)
Really hard to pick a top 3, though because I've got "silos" for different things I listen for. So, pulling players out of the solos is tough.
I could do this with a hundred players I admire.
(An example, selfishly, is John Petrucci because he's the great player closest to the way I play.)
Tough question, MCE!

Not flashy or pyrotechnic, but his leads on the Sun Sessions inspired the next generation, including Keith Richards and George Harrison.

Eliot Rosewater
(31,112 posts)the greatest you never heard of because most here will have not heard of him.
I have seen almost all of the guitar players most would talk about and I cant think of anyone like this guy. But that is my opinion. As a musician myself who has seen most of the old days bands I have never seen anything like this.
For instance as I am sure you know, when Clapton first heard Jimi, he told his friends they were all in trouble because Jimi was way better than all of them, his words more or less not mine. And Jimi said Terry was his superior in everyway, as I understand it.
NOt that any of this matters, but it reminds me of who people think the best rock drummer is, and there is actually a correct answer to that one, Ginger Baker. As a drummer myself and again, having seen most of them, I agree. Clapton laughs when people try and compare Bonham or Moon to him, I see why he laughs. Not that they aren't great, but Ginger is in an entirely different league.

Tony Iommi forgot more great riffs than any other guitarist ever learned. Came up with the riff for Paranoid on a lunch break because the record company said they were one song short for the new album.
