(65,121 posts)...the guitar solo is perfect for the song. It's a song within the song.
He's #1 on my list of most underrated guitarists of the rock era.
He's fantastic. Knows every trick in the book, knows how to get tones, and a great melodic sense.

(2,892 posts)I did learn that he was with The Cars, I had no clue until I did some research.

(65,121 posts)The lead guitarist of a band that sold 25 million albums & had 13 Top 40 hits is not eell-known enough that even a music lover like you knew who he was!
That's what I'd sure call underrated.
Two of his solos were required learning for my intermediate guitar students. Not optional. Didn't care what their musical taste was. Learn these 2!
So much to learn in 20 seconds or less.
He's my co-#1 with Donald Roeser.
My two favorite solos are from "Magic" and "Goin' Through the Motions."

(65,121 posts)My top 5 are Elliot, Martin Barre, Buck, Todd Rundgren, & Walter Becker.
The solos you chose are excellent. My favorites are Just What I Needed, You Are The Girl, & Shake It Up, though that tone on Since You're Gone flips me out. I originally thought it was Hawkes on synth until I saw Eliot playing it live.

(14,030 posts)A high school friend invited me to come with him to see them play in Denver, but I hadn't yet heard of them, and passed.
That and not going to see Emerson, Lake, and Palmer at Moby Gym in Ft. Collins are two of my biggest musical regrets.
Sigh.

Saw ELP. Sorry you couldn't. Emerson is my #1 keyboardist ever, even ahead of Wakeman.
I was a fan of Easton's playing well before I was good enough to emulate it. When I got much better, I was still impressed by what he does & how he hears things. Also, another brilliant solo by Eliot is on Tonight She Comes. Lots of good ideas on that one.
