Slaid Cleaves - You been home for a couple of years now buddy, but you're still fightin' the war...

The latest album by Austin, Texas, singer/songwriter Slaid Cleaves is titled 'Still Fight Fighting the War'. The video below is a studio performance of the title track.

I thought about posting this in Veterans group...but I'm not a veteran, and the group SOP is: "A group for DU military veterans." I could tell my story, but it's irrelevant.

Like many of Slaid's songs, this one captures a very personal experience...

Men go off to war for a hundred reasons
But they all come home with the same demons
Some you can keep at bay for a while
And some will pin you to the floor
You’ve been home for a coupla years now buddy but you’re
Still fighting the war

I was into Slaid Cleves a few years back on his "Sorrow and Smoke" album.

Lydia is a hell of a song. I know Slaid did not write Lydia but damn he done a good job finding the Lyrics and putting the melody to it.

...but I think he writes and performs some great serious, moving, powerful story songs.

Quick As Dreams is from the Wishbones album, 2004. Inspired by chapter 7 of the book Seabiscuit by Laura Hillenbrand.

Cry, from Everything You Have Will Be Taken Away, 2009.

borderline Another one from Wishbones.

When love for family is stronger than fear
When the desperation sets in
A man will cross any line that is draw

I am a "folkish" type of guy, really enjoy Townes Van Zandt and similar style artists that were around in his time and some that carry on the torch today. I put Slaid in this category and admittedly lost track of him and glad you pushed him back into my radar.

I'm a mix between a "Dead Head" and a Byrds fan. Some of it is "Hippie Grass" some Country Rock from the late 60's - 70's and some of it folk/Americana.
