There is another version of this song Mike did in 1965 which has a slower beat to it and has a more country/blues feel to it. Love this song but the slower version is amazing n worth looking for. Mike did alot of great songs before the Monkees.

Davy did a wonderful job of riding in this Monkee episode clip from the '60's! It aired on Antenna TV on March 17, 2012 - my first birthday since Davy's passing on Feb. 29, 2012. I felt like it was Davy saying "Happy Birthday"! I have been a fan of his, and The Monkees all my life, and also got to know him as a "friend" later! Davy was a wonderful entertainer, a wonderful horseman, and a wonderful person too!
This clip is from ... let me see....

Debuting on September 12, 1966, the series aired on Monday nights at 7:30pm EST, preceding I Dream of Jeannie and opposite The Iron Horse (ABC) and Gilligan's Island (CBS). A few episodes are shown out of chronological order from when they were filmed, as evident in Episode 8, "Don't Look a Gift Horse in the Mouth", and the pilot as episode 10.

Davy is given a horse, which the Monkees have to hide from their landlord, Mr. Babbitt (Henry Corden). It is returned to a heart-broken child (Kerry MacLane) and father (Jim Boles) after Davy rides it to victory over the horse of the father's neighbor. Famed character actor, and frequent Bob Hope sideman, Jerry Colonna plays veterinarian Doctor Mann.
Songs: "Papa Genes Blues," "All the Kings Horses"
Saturday mornings: "I Never Thought It Peculiar" replaced "All the King's Horses."

(27,815 posts)I don't even remember buying it, but I noticed it the other day after Peter Tork died, and enjoyed it - they really did have some good songs.
I was lucky enough to see Davy Jones years ago in a Broadway road show production of "Oliver!" in Seattle. He was playing Fagin - he was probably a tad young for the part at the time but he was very good. It was fun to see him in that role, because IIRC, he began his career playing the Artful Dodger in the same show. He ended the show singing, "I'm reviewing....the situation...." and dancing off the stage by himself to tremendous applause.

(8,709 posts)My sister and I loved Davy Jones to pieces. We emigrated here in '67 and The Monkees was the craziest thing we'd seen in our young lives. Anyhoo, I remember an episode that endeared Jones to me forever. It just came out of nowhere! Luckily someone else remembered, too, and posted the last 5 minutes of episode Some Like It Lukewarm, with Davy introducing his friend Charlie Smalls, who years later wrote the music and received a Tony for The Wiz.
Oh-oh, I kept the 5-minute clip for a few years in my video archive but it's now unavailable, I'm sure for copyright infringement. So fast forward to 20:50 and I hope you enjoy a little music lesson from long ago. It's too groovy
