Alternative Bluegrass? Or is she just a badass picker with an opinion

On how her songs should sound?

I love deep in the hollers and up on the hill tops BLUEGRASS - You guys know it's true. Hell, it's an identifying feature FFS.

But I can't find anything to bitch bout with this lady. Play it how ya want player... Mean Mary

Thank you for posting this, she mesmerized me. And the video was quite compelling.

The way she picked that banjo near the end was amazing. If you see my post, please let the video play to the end, you won't regret it.

I never heard of her until about six or seven weeks ago.

But I am for sure a fan now

ETA - Steve Martin has become a legit Bluegrass Picker as well. In the 70s I used to dismiss him as a Shakey's Pizza banjo guy - That isn't the case now

But there are a number of her songs that are clearly not "REAL BLUEGRASS" to the purists of the world - and traditional music purists are the PURIST of all the purists.

I had heard the phrase alternative bluegrass and New Grass tossed around about artists such as her, Billy Strings and others.

a song like Big Red Barn is straight Bluegrass, but this song is not and some songs like "The Sparrow and the Hawk" sound like chamber music...

First, any good guitar player could do that banjo thing. It's tuned to be simple
Second, you over read any statement.
Pretty pedestrian

I'm not a fan of this kinda stuff usually, but I've been tapping my feet and whoopin' & hollerin' to this all day.

I've got to check out Mean Mary's other songs now, so many thanks for posting!

But don’t know about hollers as it looks like this was shot at least partially at Vasquez Rocks, just north of Los Angeles.

It’s where Captain Kirk fought the Gorn, and a million other movies and tv shows were filmed.
