a bluegrass concert back in the mid 70s. He was with Lester Flatt's group at the time. The only mandolin player I have ever seen who was better was the acknowledged master: Bill Monroe, who was on stage later that night.

I think Marty was around 12 and we knew he really had "it"

He really smoked that mandolin, and has a keen sense of American musical history.

Interesting guy.. Great mandolin. It impressed me that he did not even look at the fret when he was going like crazy... Good stuff.. Cracked me up when he was talking about the fude between Flat and Scruggs and bill Monroe.. “hillbilly’s can really carry a grudge, believe me I know” ...

The one about Flat offering to put A/C in the Rymann and they told him it would be $2 million and he said "not so hot in here after all".
