Edit: I was still a dumb kid back then, so I could be wrong about any general optimism. That's probably just how I felt!

(20,202 posts)didn't really hit until the later part of the 80s. That's how GHW Bush got caught by saying "Read my lips. No new taxes". Once he was in office, he looked at the deficit and saw that, in fact, taxes had to be raised.
The end of the Cold War was looked at with optimism. Who would have thought that Russia would trade in communism for oligarchy.
