(25,397 posts)1. I actually know several mule skinners in the US Forest Service.
Mule skinners pack the mules and run the pack strings (mule trains) into remote locations, such as wilderness fire lookouts. Packing a mule is an art, and weight-and-balance is critical.
I observed a mule skinner in action last fire season as she packed and drove her team to supply a remote fire lookout (Ruffneck Peak lookout) in Idahos Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. I cant wait to share this with her! Thanks for posting it.

What is the objective in skinning mules? For the coat, for the meat?

A mule skinner, or muleskinner, is a muleteer or mule team driver.
