The Rascals: "People Got to Be Free"

This is a fave rave from 1968.

Well before I had a clue about music and/or alive, I think this song by the Rascals, which was No. 1 for several weeks in 1968, was second only to "Hey Jude" that year for great chartoppers with a political/personal enrichment theme. I love my Beatles, but this is an extremely worthy song by the Rascals, who always insisted (like the Beatles) to playing to integrated audiences and were deeply disturbed about the assassinations and violence that were a part of 1968.

Totally great song. Please remember it in 2021

Some of the best music was created out of the social turmoil of the 60's. Those of us who lived during these times were witness to amazing social change and leaders who were the ones needed for the moment. I was a college freshman and heard Robert Kennedy speak on our campus before his fateful trip to California. We were witness to assassinations that changed history. Martin Luther King, John F Kennedy, Robert F Kennedy. We experienced Vietnam, Woodstock, Motown, and the sexual revolution. The 60's were an amazing time to be a young person.
