Related: About this forumBlue Suede Shoes: Carl Perkins, Rockabilly, Perry Como TV Show
- Carl Perkins appeared on The Perry Como Show on Sat., May 26, 1956 singing his big hit Blue Suede Shoes. This was just about 3-weeks or so after the song reached it's peak on the Billboard Pop Charts at no. 2. Blue Suede Shoes did reach the no. 1 position on the Country Charts as well as reaching the no. 2 position on the R&B charts.
Up until this time, no other song in the history of recorded music had ever reached such a high position in all 3 charts.
_________
- Perkins's songs were recorded by artists (and friends) as influential as Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash and Eric Clapton which further established his place in the history of popular music. Paul McCartney claimed that "if there were no Carl Perkins, there would be no Beatles."
Called "the King of Rockabilly", he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. He also received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In the autumn of 1955, Perkins wrote "Blue Suede Shoes" after seeing a dancer get angry with his date for scuffing up his shoes.. In Dec. that year, Phillips told him, "Carl Perkins, you're my rockabilly cat now." Released on Jan. 1, 1956, "Blue Suede Shoes" was a massive chart success...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carl_Perkins

You know it's early Rock n' Roll when they're still using a stand up bass.
Too bad the director cut to the wrong camera for the guitar solo. He took a shot of the rhythm guitar when Carl was rocking out with the lead guitar. Such was live television.
Great clip, thanks for sharing it. I can watch stuff like this all night long.

That was a great clip, thanks for posting it.
What the heck was Yoko doing with that bedsheet at the end there? LOL!

It's a great session. Years later around 1991 I met her briefly at an art gallery opening. She looked well, dressed in all black, sophisticated and quiet.

I met Ringo Starr once back in my stage managing days. That was a thrill.
