|It's been seven hours and sixteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
Nothing can take away these blues
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
It's been so lonely without you here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me where did I go wrong
I can throw my arms around any girl I choose
But it just reminds me of you
I went to the doctor and guess what it told me
He said, boy, you better try to have fun no matter what you do
But he's a fool
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you, hey
All the flowers that you planted, mama
In your back yard
All died when you went away
And I know living with me is sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try
'Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares to you
Nothing compares
Nothing compares to you, to you
To you

(7,702 posts)I understand how she feels. I was "raised catholic" too.

(7,715 posts)But I think the lyrics are from Prince version?
I read the NYT article too and posted it here on DU....there were a lot of sad things, but I was genuinely surprised about Prince's abuse of Sinead O'Connor. Not cool at all.

(7,715 posts)While listening to this version (first time), I was reading about Chris Cornell...man, this song attracts tragedy, doesn't it? Sinead's tough life, Prince, and Chris....
Not sure who else has covered it, but it's really a beautiful song (I actually don't think I've ever heard Prince's version, but will check it out).

(7,715 posts)Honestly, I had been meaning to listen to Prince's version since 1990 when I heard my first version of the song (Sinead's) and learned that Prince wrote the song....I never did until now, a mere 31 years later, thanks to you!
When I hear three versions of this beautiful song, including by the writer himself, I realize how much we take for granted what art is....it is an expression, and the "same thing" can become an entirely different thing in the hands/voice of another. And these three versions are a perfect example of how three supremely talented artists expressed their own idea of this song.
Fascinating!

(7,702 posts)...You are so right about art and expression. I also really like the way the cellist played in the Chris Cornell version. Expression in it's purest form!
