came Leadbelly (I think) and some others. I believe I first heard Mississippi John Hurt singing this, but it was so long ago I don't remember. It could have been any Delta blues singer. Ram Jam merely puts their own spin on it, as does the Dartmouth pep band. (Somebody up there tried to get them banned from playing it, but they proved the origin of the song and the would-be PC person backed off.)
