The back story on "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" ?

This is a bit of history/fable/rumor with the music. The link below to her grave and headstone with a little folklore of how Dickey Betts’ famous instrumental originated.

Apparently there’s another backstory how this particular grave was chosen for the name of the song, or I should say, is rumored, was that Betts “entertained” Boz Scaggs wife here the night he composed it. I have no idea of the validity of that claim - I picked that part up from comments on YouTube - but there has to be some reason that particular headstone was picked, and I guess that is as good as any.

This great piece of music also happens to be my number 1 song of all time. I’ve replayed this more than any other song, from the moment this album first came out, throughout my life and have never tired of it.

1. I saw Dusne 4 times

Including the final weekend at the fillmore. The opening band was Albert King and then Jake Geils came out and killed it. I was concerned that maybe the would outplay the Allmans. The 4th song was Elizabeth Reed and allI can say was who is jake geils. The Allmans blew it out.

2. Never saw a live performance with Duane.

I did catch a couple of their shows including one at the Beacon which was very cool. I still have the original Fillmore album I bought at age 17 when it first came out. All I can say is anyone who was at that concert witnessed a historical rock and roll performance. That song is burned into my soul.

3. The back story

Of this album is originally they were the back up band to Jonny Winter. One of my best friends was going to the show. The Allman’s were just starting to get a name in the NYC. I told my friend that they were going to blow Jonny off the stage. I had seen them twice both as backup band to Chicago and Bonnie and Delaney. Well my friend went and the next day I asked what hey thought.

He said that he walked out and I said “what” and he replied “ on jonny winter”. He could not get over how great they were. So many people walked out that Bill Graham reversed the order and the Allman’s became the headliner. From there they closed the Fillmore and we all went to that show. The Fillmore only fit 2,649 people.

4. I can believe it.

I saw the Winters in Tampa at an outdoor concert (I think ‘75). They were okay, but no ABB. I first heard that album at a friend’s house while we were smoking some pot and he put it on and I think I was just stunned at how good it was.

By the way, the night I saw the Winters, ZZ Top was the closing act. They blew away the Winters too.

5. After the fillmore show

I went to the Stonybrook show that they later released. It had the first Blue sky and I was directly under Duane for Dreams and Elizabeth Reed. It was the next to last show before Duane passed away. I did take my kids to see them with Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks. They were great.

Took my kids to the Beacon show, I think it was 2003. Fantastic Trip. My oldest son plays lead today and is a huge fan of Trucks/Haynes.
