(13,190 posts)Since it came early in one of the most amazing stretches of albums ever made (72-77 Elton was comparable to 56-60 Elvis, 64-70 Beatles or Michael Jackson 82-89) Tumbleweed is often overlooked
In my opinion tumbleweed connection is a major link in the chain of events that brought southern/country rock into the mainstream later in the 70s.
It also includes some of his most gorgeous piano playing.

Funny thing, I only got into Elton within the last ten years. Obviously, ya can't be a kid of the 70's and 80's and not know him. But I got seriously into him like ten years ago. One day, I'm driving along with Madman Across The Water playing. And I'm singing along. And I realized, a good 40% of my style is derived (stolen) from this dude! I was stunned! We're pulling the same vocal riffs and rundowns. Accents and even tone. And I'm shocked. Fucking stunned man! And it dawns on me. He was all over the radio when I was 2,3,4,5. This dude was a huge influence on my vocal style from a very early age. How crazy is that?
