3. I saw Preston about this time.

Absolutely loved his perky stage act and keyboard style. I knew almost every song and was privileged to witness them live.

It was in Pittsburgh and he was on a twin bill with Leon Russell. By Russell's third song I'd all but forgotten about Billy Preston. I can be so fickle, but it was like having dessert after pie ala mode. All sweet!

It was like the blackest guy in rock & roll and the whitest all on one stage.

4. I was lucky enough to see Preston late in his career.

He was Clapton's keyboardist on his 2001 tour. I wish I'd been able to see him as his own act, but listening to him play during that concert was magical.
