It was written for 3 violins and (1) cello/continuo
(cello/continuo= the bass line and maybe (if you have other players: harpsichord or organ or archlute) another or other instruments to fill in the chord structure as notated on the bass line (cello part).

It also comes with an utterly delightful gigue (French for "jig&quot that is rarely played but should be!

I "discovered" it in 1980, or so when I found the record Greatest Hits of 1720 and fell in love with this.

in the string quartet form (me, the viola, playing the 3rd violin part -- which btw is exactly the same as the 1st and 2nd violin parts, since a canon is a round...) I always loved it and i think it's perfect wedding music because it's many variations on one little bass line.

In the 80's I played the Four Seasons a couple of times with this guy. We'd have a run-through an hour or so before the performance and then the concert!
