Summary: On this date, Bill Graham assembled a stellar roster of bands to participate in the filming of a television special called Welcome To The Fillmore East for broadcast on educational channels. Short sets were filmed by the Byrds, the Elvin Bishop Group, Sha-Na-Na, Van Morrison, and the Allman Brothers Band, as well as behind-the-scenes footage of Bill Graham and the Fillmore East staff at work.
The Allman Brothers performance is nothing short of spectacular and features the original lineup that included Duane Allman and Berry Oakley. Recorded 6 months prior to the legendary Live At Fillmore East double album set, this performance captures the Allman Brothers when they were a relatively new band, full of youthful passion and performing what would become classic original material when it was fresh and new. - More, Click on the YouTube Logo in the Video above...

1. I saw them

about 4 months prior to this show at Stonybrook when they backed up Chicago (5/7/70.). I then saw them right after this show again at Stonybrook when they backed up "Bonnie and Delaney". I then told one of my best friends that when he saw them at the "Fillmore Shows" that he would not think much of Johnny Winter who he went to see. The Allman's were backup to Johnny Winter that night. The next day I asked him what he thought and he told me he walked out. I said on who and he answered "Johnny Winter". He was so blown away by the Allmans. The next night Bill Graham reversed the order of the bands and the Allman's headlined. That is how you got the extended versions. Most people don't know the Allman's were the back up band for the Fillmore shows.

The next time I saw them was the closing weekend at the Fillmore and the last time I saw Duane was the Stonybrook show the next to last time Duane played. I was directly under Duane for the second set.

4. Some Great Playing Going On

That said, I think this version goes on for too long. It meanders without purpose for 2 or 3 minutes; twice.
The original studio version is only 5 minutes long. Doubling that would have been enough for me.
Both Dickey & Duane start repeating themselves after about 12 minutes.
But, the long jams were "cool" in 1971. So, here we are.

5. The greatest version

Is the closing show on the closing weekend at the Fillmore east on June 26,1971. You can hear it on the rerelease of “ eat a peach”. Simply incredible.
