Sleepy LaBeef - Kick-butt rockabilly

Sleepy LaBeef never became really famous, but he can count Sun Records as one of the labels he was heard on. Here are two pieces of his music. The first, on Mercury Records, reminds me a lot of Elvis' "That's All Right (Mama)."

This second video, a live medley from more recent years, was the way he sounded in concert. I had the pleasure of seeing him live at the now-gone Saddlerack in San Jose, California, which featured every Western and Country star that came through town. Sleepy's shows were long, hence his nickname "The Human Jukebox." Enjoy!

He was friends with a woman here in Columbus and used to regularly play at the bar she owned. Hubster’s band opened for him several times, and he sat in with Sleepy on several songs. Sleepy was a great guy, but he was hard on his band. No rehearsals, no set lists, they never knew what was coming next. Hubster said sitting in with him was like riding a roller coaster. You had no idea what was going to happen next, so you just held on and enjoyed the ride..and hoped you knew the next song he called out and could quickly figure out what key it was going to be in.
